As a Partner and Creative Director for McMahon, Squier and Associates, John Donovan is responsible for developing political and advertising strategies, copywriting, and overseeing the design and production of print and broadcast media. In 2006, Donovan created spots for the DCCC Independent Expenditure Campaign that helped win 8 of 10 targeted races – retiring GOP heavyweights like J.D. Hayworth and Nancy Johnson. In 2008, Donovan created advertising strategies for the Democratic National Committee as well as the DCCC Independent Expenditure Campaign.
Unique among Washington’s political consultants because of his extensive background in brand advertising, Donovan attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City and produced commercials for leading national ad agencies before moving to politics. As a Partner and Creative Director at Struble Oppel Donovan, he worked for some of the best-known figures in the Democratic Party, including Senators Tom Daschle, Bob Kerrey, Carl Levin, Fritz Hollings, Patty Murray, Byron Dorgan, Tim Johnson and Max Cleland. Donovan also worked closely on communications strategy for the New Democratic Party in British Columbia, writing major policy speeches on fiscal, health and environmental issues.
